  1. Excellent kit and always improving, but lacking documentation

Posted by Lesh on 20th Aug 2013

Now that I've had the ZMax for a few weeks, I can definitely say that my build has been a success. I'm new to RepRap, but I do have lots of experience working on other Cartesian robot type machines. I chose the UltiBots kit because of the high quality components, the company's community involvement including the development of several custom components, and of course, the taller Z MendelMax design.

Everything shipped and arrived exactly when they said it would, well packaged and labeled. It came with a CD with instructions, software, as well as pictures and CAD drawings to aid in assembly.

I was able to put it together in a two weeks, but not devoting huge chunks of time except on the weekends. I would say that frame and moving hardware assembly is about half and electronics is about half of the project. Wire management is a beast, but sleeving and cable ties are included to assist.

Soldering skills, mainly to shorten/extend wires are a must. I assume everything is included hardware wise, but I ran into a hiccup in that the steps in the documentation don't always correspond to a particular set of parts. I found myself having to steal from various bags for different sized screws as recommended in the instructions, the end result of which was that stuff got mixed up. I ended up making a trip to Home Depot, then Fastenal to get more hardware, longer in some instances where the recommended hardware didn't seem to do the job.

The documentation is definitely Alpha-stage. You can make it through most of the frame assembly following steps, but at a certain point, you just have to look at pictures. But anyone building a kit of this complexity better be able to employ some problem solving skills. The huge community of RepRap/MendelMax makes finding answers pretty easy though.

Calibration was pretty painless, and the defaults in the firmware were 95% there for me. My very first prints were successful minus some curl because I didn't try the ABS juice at first.

Rambling a bit, but overal this is a great kit with high quality parts, but with poor documentation offset by excellent support from the community and especially from UltiBots.

  2. A vase printing demon!

Posted by Cecil on 7th Aug 2013

The extra 70 mm of vertical print space (Z axis) is amazing, especially if you like printing vases and tall structures. The kit is derived from the MendelMax, so all of the support FAQ and online documentation still matches. Ultibots includes a CD with pictures of completed machines, which show a lot of small details about routing wires and installing parts. The Ultibots machines fully cover the high voltage (mains) from kid fingers, which is an important safety consideration.
