 Product Description

Kossel 250 V-Slot 3D Printer - DIY Kit

Nothing quite captures the imagination like a Delta style 3D printer in action.  The UltiBots Kossel 250 V-Slot is a fun kit to assemble and print from.  It has a 250mm heated bed with an aluminum heat spreader and Kapton Heater. This kit uses a PG35L geared motor directly mounted to the effector.  Our Micro Extruder is compact, lightweight, and proven.  It is unlike Bowden Tube style exctruders because the filament is fed directly into the E3D Hot End. Together with V-Slot extrusion and wheels this kit is straight forward and less complicated to build compared to many FFF 3D printers.

We recommend these other items:

***NOTE: Not all companies publish Z height correctly. Z height varies from the Peak Z to the Perimeter Z. Be sure to research and compare TRUE Z heights. K250VS Perimeter Z heights are 190mm for Traxxas Arms and 180mm for MagBall Arms. Peak Z = max Z height when all carriages are in the home position. Perimeter Z = max Z height when the print nozzle is over the outer perimeter and one carriage is in the home position

NOTE: THIS KIT IS IN BETA STATUS PRIMARILY BECAUSE THE BUILD GUIDE IS NOT YET FINALIZED.  THE DESIGN IS GENERALLY STATIC BUT IMPROVEMENTS ARE POSSIBLE.  PERSONAL SUPPORT DURING YOUR BUILD, LEVELING, AND CALIBRATION IS AVAILABLE.

  1. Great product and great support!

Posted by Terry Speake on 22nd Feb 2015

First off, I am a newbie to 3D printing but have been a mechanical and electronics hobbyist all my life.

I am completely satisfied with the product and more than satisfied with the customer support.

The build had a few hiccups, some due to me and some due to documentation not geared toward an absolute beginner. However it went very well considering I have never even seen a 3D printer in real life.

Learning to calibrate is a steep curve but not insurmountable. After a few dozen calibration prints and tinkering I am really close to getting results that I (leaning toward OCD persuasion) am tickled pink with.

My first real print is here: http://www.thingiverse.com/make:122062

  2. The Best Customer Service

Posted by Richard Turnock on 11th Feb 2015

I am still amazed at how much we covered in one phone call.
I picked up so many things to do and improve what I am doing.
    Sorry if I am gushing.
I had a bad experience buying a 3D printer that had very poor quality plastic parts, unusable DIY hot end, and then rejection when I wanted to ask questions. Very confusing way to run a business.
Your approach to customer service, innovation, continuous improvement and communication are the best.

  3. Great printer with a few (beta) flaws

Posted by Levi Wheatcraft on 6th Feb 2015

I ordered this printer after a link on a kickstarter I backed that never came to fruition. Knowing it was a beta kit I contacted Brad before ordering. He was very quick at responding and assuring me that with a little mechanical know-how, it would be a good kit to get started with. I ordered it expecting a significant lead time but was surprised when I was contacted only a short time later that it was getting ready to ship! Excellent!

I received the kit, it was very well packaged and immediately started working on it. Now, I will say that I had read all of the manuals prior to receiving it and that I also have some experience from previous projects assembling the electronics. At the time of receiving the kit, the instructions were lacking at best(read _BETA_ kit), missing in some cases. They've gotten better since then but beware that this is a BETA kit, be prepared for some challenges, but Brad is always available if you run into problems. Luckly I did not have problems assembling the kit, but I did have 2 of the stepper drivers burn out due to the heat sinks. I would recommend that you cut the heatsinks shorter to avoid the surface mount components as much as possible(there's a fan pointed at the drivers as well and I've had 20+ hr prints without problem). Also beware that the firmware allows the printer to move a full 200mm travel x and y, but because of the nature of a delta printer, you cant reach that far in diagonals(ie large negative x and y). During testing I did crack a couple of the carbon rods without knowing this(epoxy and recalibration to match the other rods and it worked fine). If this printer was a full production kit, I would mark it down a star for that alone, however again this is a _BETA_ kit and I did contact Brad with this information as well as some instruction additions to which he added to the documentation.

Now, roughly 2 months later, I've been printing the cleanest most complex items I can find on this printer and they are just GORGEOUS! This printer prints faster and cleaner than printers 2 to 3 to 4 times more expensive that I've seen! Truly a great adaptation of the Kossel design and I look forward to everything I will do with it in the future!

TL;DR: If you want an out of the box printing experience, probably go for the mini kossel. If you don't mind a little problem solving and are looking to produce beautiful prints quickly with very little limitation on size, this kit is for you.

  4. Great kit

Posted by vp on 26th Jan 2015

The kit is nicely packed and well labeled. Fsr kit is definetly worth the money. International shippment worked well. Customer support answered quickly.

  5. Well designed and packaged.

Posted by Kiet on 19th Jan 2015

Very impressed with how organized the shipment was. Different components were well labeled with individual bags of nuts and bolts, etc. This helped with the build

Highly recommend the FSR kit. This makes leveling the bed very easy. Helps if you plan on changing hot end...makes recalibration a breeze.

I almost bought a low-end pre-assembled printer until I found this kit. Extremely happy I bought the kit instead. Learned a lot about the different components of a 3D printer. This will allow me better to maintain or improve if needed.

  6. Excellent Kit

Posted by David on 15th Dec 2014

I found this to be an excellent kit which includes everything short of the filament. The parts are well packaged/organized and everything fits together well and works as expected. I did the FSR and assembled rod upgrades and the auto calibration worked great after doing a basic manual calibration to verify everything was working correctly. I would easily recommend this kit for anyone wanting a complete Delta printer that has everything you need to get started.

  7. Awesome printer! Love the extra build volume.

Posted by Carl on 25th Sep 2014

I did a lot of research before choosing where to buy my Kossel kit from, then I stumbled upon Ultibots. At the time they only had a mini version, so I contacted them to see if a larger version was going to be available soon. Within a day I had a response back that they were planning on making one and that I could be a part of the alpha if I liked. I am so glad i chose to go with this printer! I was able to assemble it within 14 hours and setup the software and learn how to use it in another 3. The best thing about purchasing this printer from Ultibots was the customer service. Anytime I have any sort of question they are able to respond quickly and knowledgeably. Thank you Ultibots for making my first 3d printer experience a great one!
